About

Made out of love for hip-hop

Not by a team of historians. Not by a record label. Just by someone who can't stop listening, reading and talking about this music.

This encyclopedia started as a list in Notion.

Then the list got longer. Then every artist got a story. Then the stories got connections.
And at some point it was a website.

It's made by Supa Dupa Goods.
Out of passion. Nothing more, nothing less.

It will contain errors

Let's just get that out of the way.

Some errors are there because I clicked the wrong category.
Some are there because I misjudged an artist.
Some are there because it was late.

Don't hate me for it.

If you spot one, let me know. I'm happy to fix it. Seriously.

Every part of hip-hop deserves a spotlight

I have love for every part of hip-hop. The boom-bap and the trap. The conscious and the gangsta. The underground and the charts.

Every part needs a spotlight of its own. That's why the encyclopedia uses genres.

So when an artist is filed under Hip-Pop, that simply means they've made plenty of commercial, mainstream hits and worked with pop stars.

It doesn't mean they're less "hip-hop".
Not even a little bit.

About the connections

The Hip-Hop Map and the Influences on each artist page show who influenced whom.

Those connections come from several sources. Often it's an interview, an article or a podcast where an artist named the rappers who shaped them.

But I have to admit: sometimes I made the connection out of a feeling.
"This is probably true."

So treat the map like a conversation at the record store, not like a court ruling.

Spotted something?

Wrong genre. Wrong year. A connection that makes no sense. An artist who absolutely has to be in here.

Send a message on Instagram. I read everything.

Peace.
