“Strong Island” gave hip-hop some of its most important voices. Rakim from Wyandanch changed the art of rapping with his calm, complex flow on Paid in Full, and Public Enemy from Roosevelt, with Chuck D and Flava Flav, made rap political and loud.
De La Soul from Amityville brought humor and color with 3 Feet High and Rising and helped form the Native Tongues, while Leaders of the New School introduced Busta Rhymes to the world. MF DOOM, who grew up on Long Island, became one of the most celebrated underground MCs of all time.
