Hip-hop's first hit came from New Jersey: Sugar Hill Records in Englewood released The Sugarhill Gang's “Rapper's Delight” in 1979.
From Newark and East Orange came Queen Latifah, who brought pride and positivity to rap, Naughty by Nature, the first winners of the Grammy for Best Rap Album, and the funky, wild-style rhymes of Redman. The Fugees and Lauryn Hill took the state to the top of the world with The Score and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
