Compton became world-famous through one album: N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton (1988). Eazy-E, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre told the story of their city without a filter, and gangsta rap was born on the West Coast.
Dr. Dre went on to create G-funk and to become one of the most important producers ever, and The Game revived Compton in the 2000s. Then Kendrick Lamar made his city the center of rap again with good kid, m.A.A.d city, followed by Pulitzer-winning DAMN.
