Hip-hop in the 2020s celebrated its 50th birthday and is more global and diverse than ever. Hits are made on TikTok, drill is everywhere and veterans are making some of their best work.
The story. In August 2023 hip-hop turned 50, with tributes all over the world. Nas won his first Grammy with King's Disease and released a run of strong albums, André 3000 surprised with a flute album, and Kendrick Lamar and Drake fought the most talked-about beef in years, with "Not Like Us" winning Record and Song of the Year at the Grammys. Ice Spice brought Bronx drill to the charts, Central Cee and Little Simz made UK rap a global force, and artists like Larry June, Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist proved the underground is thriving.
The sound. Everything at once: drill, trap, boom-bap, jazzy producer albums and genre-free experiments. Short, viral hooks and long, personal albums live side by side.
