What is trap? Trap is the sound of Atlanta that took over the world. The name comes from the "trap house", where drugs are sold, and the first trap songs were about exactly that. Today the sound is everywhere, from pop to drill.

Where it comes from. T.I. named the genre with his album Trap Muzik (2003), and Young Jeezy and Gucci Mane built the scene in the mid-2000s, with producers like DJ Toomp, Shawty Redd and Zaytoven. Around 2010 Lex Luger and later Metro Boomin and Southside made the sound bigger and darker. In the 2010s trap became mainstream music: Migos invented their triplet flow, Travis Scott made it psychedelic and Cardi B took it to number one.

The sound. Booming Roland TR-808 bass, rapid-fire hi-hats in triplets and rolls, hard snares and dark, cinematic synths. Rappers ride the beat with fast, repetitive flows and plenty of ad-libs.
